National Committee to Free the Angola 3 Statement on Brandon Darby

The National Committee to Free the Angola 3 is saddened and dismayed by Brandon Michael Darby's recent admission of working as an FBI informant. Although Brandon was never a member of the group, he became involved through King and attended several events.

It is beyond our comprehension that with the massive need in New Orleans since Katrina, and communities throughout the United States, that the Federal Government would choose to utilize tax payers money to infiltrate groups exercising their First Amendment Constitutional Rights. More upsetting, is that FBI documentation shows that Brandon focused much of his surveillance on scott crow and Lisa Fithian--Texas organizers who were instrumental in the founding and development of Common Ground and also participate in the Angola 3 struggle.

Most frightening is that it does not appear that Brandon's family was threatened or that he faced trumped-up charges in order for the FBI to enlist his cooperation. Instead, we see that Brandon is actually proud of spying on his friends, and that the rhetoric in his open letter directly contradicts Brandon's behavior and actions.

Brandon was likeable and at times charismatic, but there was always this manic, reckless side to him that was more than a little unsettling. The fact that he still considers himself an activist and his reprehensible actions as somehow revolutionary, shows just how far off the deep end he's plunged.

The struggle for peace and justice is replete with governmental efforts to derail the work through both governmental and self-employed provocateurs. This infiltration is not a novelty, but the struggle continues and is bigger than the efforts of any Brandon Darbys. In his efforts to make his mark - he has not elevated himself into prominence, rather - he has relegated himself into insignificance, (lets leave him there!), by deceiving and defrauding his associates and encouraging and entrapping individuals to inappropriate and illegal activity that he devised. Angola Three and their affiliates join in the search for justice for the Austin Two.
